Pro Opera – my most interesting month in Krasnoyarsk.

456Last month we organized  Pro Opera. What an intense 2-week period. Too much worrying for me. Many instances tested my nerves. Too much red wine and cigarettes. Too much arguing in his toilet; maybe too much kisses, while she storms out of the apartment and the bang of the door echoes in the empty corridor. Somewhere is Carmen, somewhere is King Igor, somewhere is Iolante, who are you?

When I analyze the event and my 2 weeks cooperating with Krasnoyarsk State Opera and Ballet Theatre, I only feel maybes. No – there is one certainty. That the content of the event was spot-on.  Neeme Kuningas, the Chief Producer of the theatre; Maria Tikhonova revealed their secrets in a cozy way, participants could try on theatre costumes and take singing lessons and see mini opera. Two of those songs were so powerful, that even me, who considers opera boring, was touched, felt mixed feelings, rush; at the same time not wanting to let go..

But still.. too few people.. We really tried to promote it. Me asking 5 minutes before the event   Kebab-eating babushka in front of Pilot to join „ our opera event!“„Why free?“ she answered angrily, while biting on his oily kebab. Fortunately, she came. Tried on costumes and became a queen from the  17th century.

Storming in and out of theatre  rooms, weird alleys, secret cabinets.. she wearing a mask, looking so creepy – oh now we are doing horror. Then everyone questioning me – where did you take this stupid promo clip idea? I wrote it in five minutes. All theatre people considered it stupid,I made a serious face, commanded „moving ghost“ like a film director and sat in the editing like I really knew something. I had no idea what I was doing but I pretended I did.

Being around theatre people is intense and  their passion contagious. Maybe it is the intense arguments over sounds, plot lines, ballerinas and stage management you accidently witness between the  conductor, the producer and the ballet master. Everyone takes the opera  as it is their own baby; their tears, emotions, nerves, life, heart, sweat and tears are there, and do not you try to take away the best parts. Maybe it is the time when we, volunteers, are taken to rehearshals,  seeing the producers conducting the actions, witnessing the outstanding vocal powers in aria singing, high, strong, alive, more, yes!; feeling like the whole body is echoing..then they become  silent, look at us slyly;  now Giuame, French volunteer, come and correct our French pronounciation. Come closer to our world, if you dare to, it is crazy, it is emotional but do not worry! Young tenors were so cool, so welcoming that when Guigui returned from them, he himself tried to sing aria. Opera is contagious.

But still so many maybes.Maybe it is their strange plot lines.Dramatic love stories. Maybe it is her warm and feminine  energy and her ice-cold, aloof stare.Maybe it is the temperature difference between them. Maybe it is the fact that she wrote  a plot about us and gave me the worst character. Maybe it is the creative chaos, messed up papers, doing things at the last minute, meetings around midnight, rush, unpredictability, mess that drives us on but me nuts. Maybe it is arguing in his apartment 3 am. Maybe it is my obsession to seduce every female connected to the project.  Maybe it is anger towards their non-existent punctuality and my rebelism to yell FUCK Opera and then starting to stare at ballerinas, hearing stage manager directing those beautiful ladies. So gentle, sweet, pure.

But exactly when I decide that I am  tired, another door opens, where secrets reveal. Oh see there comes the conductor and smiles kindly! Oh see – there are colorful costumes, many of them very old and ancient. Oh see – talented lady and her authors´ concert! Oh see – so sensual woman, sweating, wearing a costume, coming from stage. I was too shy to look. Or all those kings and misses from Italy or Russia, waiting to go on a stage,  looking at me slyly, I am not real, I am magic, I am character. Many times I felt I am on LSD.( Since it is an official blog, I will not explain what I mean by that. )

I still think what happens on the stage in opera is boring. However – when Neeme and Maria showed the clips from famous operas I felt inspired. With a lot  of resources you can create  such a magnificent worlds. Now – this world-creating, mystery, building fairytales; dramas and adding sounds and singing to it-  is something that left impression on me. 15- hour work days, endless editing, clash of personalities – everyone in their own uniqueness and crazyness trying to fit or blend in-; drama and obsession to their craft – intense but larger than life! It was the most interesting period in my life in Krasnoyarsk.

I am grateful for Neeme for opening doors to the theatre. I am grateful for seeing and understanding how such a place works. I am happy to witness  Pro Opera.

Ooperimöllust Krasnojarskis.

Lõpuks on Ooperi möll läbi.

Liigset punast veini, liigset suitsetamist. Liiga palju vaidlemist peldikus, võibolla liiga palju suudlemist, mil ta ukse pauguga kinni lõi ja korterist välja tormas. Meie jäime ikka vaidlema.

Liiga palju kaost. Mööda teatrikoridori kaameraga tormamine, temal mask peas. Saladuslikud käigud, värvikad kostüümid; näed, seal harjutavad baleriinid, oh sealt ukse vahelt kiikab dirigent, näed, see seal on grimeeritud kuningas Igor.

MEIL ON VAJA SEAL TANTSUNUMBER SOOVITADA!  .. ei jäta kunstiline juht jonni.. SIIN POLE RUUMI JU, hakkab pealavastaja kannatust kaotama; samal ajal tambib dirigent ikka trummi. Ei midagi isiklikku, ei midagi pahatahtlikku. Lihtsalt kolm inimest, kelle jaoks valmiv lavastus on just nagu nende endi laps, nende veri, hing ja ihu. Siia lisada  pikad jalad turundusosakonnast; kerge püstjalakomöödia, kui teatri kohta tänavaküsitlust tegime; vaidlemine tähtsusetute detailide üle teatrikunstnikuga ja kõik need baleriinid – koguaeg puls peksis, nagu oleks narko all.
